Hyderabad is set to host campuses of two foreign universities, with the University of London and Northeastern University planning to establish a presence in the city, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy said on Tuesday, September 1.
In a social media post, Revanth said the initiative was part of the state government’s efforts to develop Hyderabad into a “Global Knowledge Hub”. He said the plan would bring together education, skills and sports while preparing young people in Telangana for opportunities in the global workforce.
The Chief Minister also said Harvard University and some of its schools were interested in offering selected programmes and courses in Telangana. He did not provide details about the programmes under consideration or when they could be launched.
The CM, who recently visited the United Kingdom, said that the state government had held discussions with several prominent universities including Oxford University, Cambridge University, SOAS University of London, Imperial College London, London Business School and the London School of Economics.
According to Revanth, the discussions had produced “positive outcomes”. He also said meetings with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and several leading universities in the US had received a positive response.
The proposed collaborations could go beyond establishing physical campuses. Revanth said that the state was exploring academic programmes, certification courses, joint research initiatives, centres of excellence and programmes for working professionals.
The partnerships are being positioned as part of Telangana’s broader effort to strengthen Hyderabad’s position as an international education destination. The government aims to provide students and professionals access to global academic and skills-based opportunities without requiring them to leave the state for every programme.
“These pioneering efforts will make Hyderabad a global educational powerhouse,” Revanth said.
The proposed campuses would also place Hyderabad among the Indian cities seeking to attract foreign universities under the regulatory framework introduced by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The UGC notified regulations in 2023 to facilitate the establishment and operation of campuses of foreign higher education institutions in India. Under the framework, eligible foreign universities can establish campuses in the country subject to regulatory approvals.
Data presented by the Union Education Ministry in Parliament in August 2026 showed that 15 foreign higher education institutions had received 16 Letters of Intent to establish campuses in India.
