A popular Hyderabad school’s fee structure shows that it is charging Rs 2.5 lakh as the yearly fees for nursery school. A viral post purportedly showing Nasr School’s fee structure indicated that they charge as much as Rs 3.2 lakh for students of Class 5, sparking surprise and outrage.
The biggest component of these fees mentioned is the tuition fee, to which an initiation fee, admission fee, and a small refundable caution deposit is also added. The exorbitant amount doesn’t include the cost of transportation, lunch, uniforms, books, field trips, and other additional expenses that could end up costing over another Rs 50,000.
A social media post on the fee structure at Nasr, a private school in Hyderabad affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations(CISCE), sparked a fresh debate on high school fees charged across India, and particularly in Hyderabad.
The Telangana Education Commission has drafted a legislation called the Telangana Private Schools and Junior Colleges Fee Regulatory and Monitoring Commission Draft Bill, 2025, which is being mulled over by the government.
The draft Bill proposes a regulatory body called the Telangana Private School Fee Regulatory and Monitoring Commission, which would separate private schools into different categories and set an upper limit on their fees while considering their actual costs. The Commission could also recommend imposing fines up to Rs 10 lakh on schools, or push for cancelling their recognition.
According to the Union Education Ministry’s Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) Plus report for 2023-24, only 28% of nearly 43,000 schools in Telangana are private, unaided recognised schools. But 60% of the state’s nearly 73 lakh school students attend these private schools.
