
The 2024 annual report of the Rachakonda Police Commissionerate reveals that while the overall crime rate went up by 4%, the number of cyber crimes reported rose by 42.5%. The year 2024 saw a total of 4,458 reported cyber crime cases, of which a majority (2,125 cases) were related to false part-time job or investment opportunities. Phishing attacks of various kinds were the next biggest cyber crime issue with 996 cases.
A total of 143 loan app harassment cases were also reported this year. “An amount of Rs 22 crore was successfully returned to the victims of cyber fraud,” the report said. Another Rs 23 crore is frozen in the bank accounts of the accused, it added.
The report also said that crimes against women reduced by 9% this year. There were 18 dowry deaths, three dowry-related murders, and 1,222 cases of domestic violence or harassment reported this year in Rachakonda. There were 392 child sexual abuse cases filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Sixty-one cases of abetment to suicide, where the victims were women, were also registered.
The Rachakonda police filed 253 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and seized various substances worth Rs 88.25 crore, including 2,415 kg of ganja.
The number of road accidents under the Rachakonda Commissionerate fell overall by 12% this year, with accidents along the Outer Ring Road reducing by 30%, the report said. The Commissionerate saw 624 fatal road accidents in 2024, in which 653 people were killed. On the ORR alone, there were 18 fatal accidents, resulting in 19 deaths.
