The News Minute | July 17, 2014 | 12:37 PM IST Around 2000 farmers living in Villupuram district, Tamil Nadu have demanded a total ban on the illegal crusher quarries that are operating there. Reports suggest that many farmers from the villages around the area where the illegal quarrying is taking place have lost their livelihood. A New Indian Express report claims that the situation started to turn bad when multinational companies joined hands with local quarry owners and politicians. It says that quarrying has gone as deep as 300 feet, though the stipulated limit is 30 feet. It also plundered up to 3,000 crore worth of construction aggregate. The quarrying has also made life impossible in the area, with water and land in the region becoming unfit for use. Breathing related diseases are also on the rise due to pollution, reports say.
