Kalaignar Karunanidhi, the president of DMK and five-time Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, passed away in Chennai at 6.10 pm on Tuesday at the age of 94. The announcement was made at 6.40 pm.

The leader was admitted to the Kauvery hospital in Chennai 11 days ago, and passed away due to age related complications.

In a release, Kauvery hospital said, "With deep anguish we announce the demise of our beloved Kalaignar Dr M Karunanidhi on 7.8.2018 at 6.10 pm. Despite the best possible efforts of a team of doctors and nurses to resuscitate him, he failed to respond." 

"We profoundly mourn the loss of one of the tallest leaders of India and we share the grief of family members and fellow Tamilians worldwide," the release further added. 
Karunanidhi is survived by his wife Dayalu Ammal, his partner Rajathi Ammal, and his children Stalin, Alagiri, Kanimozhi, Selvi, Muthu, Thamizharasu, and various grandchildren.
