New Delhi: Hundreds of Shiromani Akali Dal-Badal workers staged a protest at the Congress office here on Friday over a legislation to set up a separate Sikh committee to manage gurudwaras in Haryana, police said.

The protest, against the Congress government in Haryana for going ahead with the legislation, was held at the All-India Congress Committee (AICC) office at Akbar Road.

The protestors broke police barricades and shouted slogans against the party. Police used water cannons to disperse the crowd.

"Around 400 Sikhs protested outside the AICC office. Some of them have been taken to police station," said Deputy Commissioner of Police S.B.S. Tyagi.

The Haryana assembly recently passed a bill under which a new Haryana Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (HSGPC) would be set up to manage gurudwaras in the state.

The Haryana Sikh Gurudwaras Management Bill, 2014, has been approved by the state governor.
