Winners of the 71st National Film Awards were announced on Friday, August 1. Superstar Shah Rukh Khan is set to receive his first National Award for the action film Jawan, directed by Atlee. He will share the award for best actor in a leading role with Vikrant Massey for 12th Fail.
Rani Mukerji won best actress in a leading role for Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway.
Sudipto Sen won best direction for The Kerala Story, a propaganda film widely panned for its exaggerated, false narrative that has been equated to hate speech.

The final list of awardees was submitted by the jury to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw last week, in the presence of Minister of State Dr L Murugan and Information and Broadcasting Secretary Sanjay Jaju. The awards announcement was live-streamed through official government channels.
