The latest religion-wise Census data is set to be released shortly.

Here’s what we know based on Times of India’s report provided ahead of the release of Census of India’s religious population between 2001 and 2011.

  • Growth of muslim population has declined from 24% rise, as compared to 29 % between 1991 and 2001.
  • The growth however, is higher than the country’s national average at 18%
  • The most rapid increase in Muslim population was in Assam wherich accounts for 34.2% share of the total population, a reason attributed to the continuous inflow of Bangaladeshi immigrants into the country.
  • According to the state-wise data provided, Manipur became the only state to show a fall in Muslim population compared to other states.
  • The data had been compiled by March 2014, however it was not released by the previous UPA government.

According to a BBC report, Hindu nationalists have insisted that that there is a real threat of minority community becoming a majority.

According to the last 2001 Census report, “populations of all major religions have experienced large growth in the recent past, but growth among Muslims has been higher than average”.

This latest information about the slump in the growth of Muslim population has negated the theory.

The latest religion-wise Census data is to be released shortly, according to Union Minister Rajnath Singh.
