The National Human Rights Commission, India has issued a notice to the Haryana DGP seeking a detailed report on the arrest of Ashoka University professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad within a week.
In a statement, the commission said it had come across a Times of India report dated May 20 which which “contains a gist of the allegations on the basis of which he has been arrested”, and which “discloses, prima facie, that the human rights and liberty of the said professor have been violated”.
This came hours after the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Ali Khan Mahmudabad in a plea challenging his arrest for a Facebook post on Operation Sindoor, Bar and Bench reported.
However, a bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh reportedly refused to stay the two FIRs registered by Haryana Police against Khan. The bench also directed that an SIT be formed to probe the matter. It said the SIT should consist of three IPS officers who are not from Haryana or Delhi and must include a woman officer, according to the report.
The bench said that Khan has not made out any case for stay on investigation. In addition to terms and conditions to be imposed, the court also restrained Khan from making any further online posts or speeches on the issue.
