The News Minute | September 10, 2104 | 11.35 am ISTGone are the days when you would flick through the yellow pages, a fat book containing information about local advertisements and the numbers of everyone in your district. Now, that directory of landline numbers is going online with one rider. Thanks to commercial advertising, many people may choose not to be included in the directory.Mint reported that all telecom operators which offer landline connections, including the government-run ones, would have to compile directories of their customers by September 15, according to an order of the Department of Telecommunications.According to the Mint report, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Limited (MTNL) together account for 80 percent of the 2.8 crore landline subscribers in the country, followed by Airtel (12 percent), Tata Teleservices (5.6 percent) and RCom (4.3 percent). The progress made by BSNL and MTNL could not be ascertained, but RCom has completed its database and Airtel is in the process of compiling the online directory.Although the order had been issued in March 2013, compliance had been held up because telecom operators had to address privacy concerns and ensure that those who wished to be excluded from the directory had the time to inform the company of their choice.
