The BCCI on Friday, May 9, has confirmed that the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been suspended for a week as escalating military tensions between India and Pakistan cast a long shadow over the cricketing spectacle.
A Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official confirmed the suspension to PTI: “It does not look nice that cricket goes on while the country is at war.” The IPL, which had been scheduled to culminate with the final in Kolkata on May 25, now remains in limbo until further notice.
Thursday’s fixture between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala was called off during the 12th over of the chase when sirens blared across neighbouring towns. Players and spectators were shepherded off the field as a precautionary safety measure, marking the first mid‐game cancellation in IPL history due to cross‐border hostilities.
“We had no option but to halt play,” a team official recounted. “The safety of players, support staff and fans is paramount.” The standstill triggered urgent deliberations within the BCCI, given the growing unease over hosting large gatherings so close to potential conflict zones.
