Sankaranarayanan, the governor of Maharashtra, who was on Sunday transferred and appointed as the Mizoram governor for the remainder of his term, has resigned as Governor. The governor was reluctant to take charge as Mizoram governor. He told the media earlier in the day that he would rather quit than bear the disgrace of being transferred.By evening, news trickled in that the governor had quit. Around 5.15 pm, he addressed a press conference and confirmed that he had put in his papers and will return to active politics. "I have worked as Governor in many states, including North-East. I cannot go to Mizoram, and you know the reasons why I was transferred. As a governor, I never played politics and was friendly to all political parties," he said.Sankaranarayanan repeatedly said that now he would return to active politics as he was a 'free man'.A press communique said Gujarat Governor Om Prakash Kohli "will discharge the functions of the governor of Maharashtra, in addition to his own duties, until regular arrangement for the office of the governor of Maharashtra are made".The appointment of Sankaranarayanan, 82, as the governor of Mizoram follows after Kamla Beniwal was sacked Aug 7 on charges of misusing the governor's office.In June this year, he was one of the first Governors who came out openly and revealed that he was being pressurised to quit from his post. Governor Sankaranarayanan had revealed that he had received two calls from Home Secretary Anil Goswami, asking him to demit office.Sankaranarayanan, a Congress leader from Kerala was appointed the governor of Maharashtra for the second time in 2012, and his current term in office ends in 2017.Prior to this, he served as the governor of Jharkhand and Nagaland for a total period of three years. After Beniwal was sacked, former union home secretary Vinod Kumar Duggal had been given the charge of Mizoram.inputs IANS
