
The Union Urban Development Ministry on Saturday released the "Swachh Bharat" rankings, which ranked a few cities in each state according to parameters related to sanitation and cleanliness. The parameters included extent of open defecation, solid waste management, septage management, waste water treatment, drinking water quality, surface water quality of water bodies and mortality due to water borne diseases.The survey conducted during 2014-15, was commissioned by the ministry as required under the National Sanitation Policy of 2008.All the 476 Class-1 cities in 31 states and union territories, with a population above one lakh, were surveyed for assessing total sanitation practices covering a set of parameters, a ministry statement added.Here is how the southern states fared.KarnatakaKarnataka has done a fine job with four cities making it to the top 10.While Bengaluru bagged the achievement of cleanest state capital, Mysore topped the charts as the cleanest city in the country, with minimal open defecation and extensive adoption of solid waste management practices.Hassan and Mandya also made the list at 5th and 6th rank respectively.KeralaKerala also fared well in the ranking with Thiruvananthapuram coming eighth and Kochi figuring eighth on the top 10 while Kozhikode came in fifth compared to the other major cities.As far as capitals were concerned, Thiruvananthapuram was ranked the second cleanest capital city after Bangalore. Tamil NaduChennai had little to cheer as it stood 61 in the overall list. Among capital cities, it was ranked 12th, and did not make it to the top 10 list.However, all was not lost as Trichy was declared the second cleanest city in the country after Mysuru. Madurai and Coimbatore also managed to get into the top 200 while the Union territory of Puducherry was ranked 23. TelanganaThe Telugu speaking states fared the worst as not even one town from the two states figures in the top 25 cleanest places in the country, even though 11 cities from Telangana and 30 from Andhra Pradesh were part of the survey.Only Warangal from Telangana featured in the top 50 by grabbing the 33rd rank while the two twin cities of Secunderabad (191) and state capital Hyderabad, (275) did no fare well.Another city, Nizamabad was ranked 82nd.Andhra PradeshAndhra Pradesh also did not have much to show as only three cities out of the 30 surveyed, made it to the top 100. Vizianagaram was ranked 58th with Narsaraopet right behind it at 59th and Guntur at 70th.However, the state's port city of Visakhapatnam fared better than Hyderabad and was listed 205th while Vijaywada came in 266th.
