People forming human pyramids to break dahi handis is a common sight on dahi handi day. A DNA report says on an average one to three Govindas (as the climbers are called) die each year.
Last year, 625 were injured in Maharashtra, many of them children. This year, the Maharashtra State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR) has banned kids younger than 12 years from participating in dahi handis.
The report also talks about a 14-year-old boy who passed away on Saturday, because of injuries sustained during a practise session few days ago.
Though Oriental Insurance has been insuring participants for some years, it seems there are less people coming forward to insure this year as there is confusion if the entire festival would be banned.
