The Congress on Tuesday accused the government of allegedly snooping against party Vice-President Rahul Gandhi.

This was in connection to the recent profiling carried out by police officers on Rahul Gandhi. The officers allegedly asked questions about Gandhi's dress and footwear.

"Why does the police need to know his shoe size... is this the sort of spying that this government plans against political opponents?" a report by NDTV quotes Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad as saying.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley then asked the Congress "not to make a mountain of what is not even a molehill" and said that it was part of a routine security enquiry.

According to a report by The Telegraph Jaitley cited the incident of Rajiv Gandhi's assaination. "Why should they (the police) know the marks on our body? Are we aware that the body of a former Prime Minister of this country, who was assassinated, was identified by his shoes?" Jaitley said in the Lok Sabha. "Therefore, (a question on) what kind of shoes we wear may look funny to the Congress party today but it is relevant for security purposes", he added.

Rajiv Gandhi was wearing sneakers at the May 1991 poll rally in Tamil Nadu where he was assassinated.
