Nitin B | The News Minute | January 28, 2015 | 2:00 pm ISTThe YSR Congress Party on Monday wrote to Telangana Assembly Speaker S. Madhusudana Chary requesting him to disqualify two MLA's, B. Madan Lal and Thati Venkateswarlu - under the anti-defection law, following their defection to the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS).The YSRCP is a regional political party in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana founded by Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy, the son of former AP chief minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy (popularly known as YSR) in 2011.Both YSR and Jaganmohan Reddy had been members of the Indian National Congress. Of late, the party is experiencing a lot of defections in both the states, with Andhra leaders jumping to the TDP-BJP alliance while Telangana leaders jump to the ruling TRS.The YSRCP say the defectors are putting their own interest before the people's as national parties like the BJP and the Congress are much stronger than the YSRCP - and can bounce back from taking a hit in the elections.Telakapalli Ravi, a journalist and political analyst earlier told The News Minute that “The politician’s crossover to the ruling party only after the election is done in the name of protecting the people’s interests.†“Both the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have witnessed crossovers. Party members from YSR congress jumped to the TDP soon after the elections in AP†Mr. Ravi addedIt seems like the defectors would rather serve the people's interests - representing the ruling party, rather than the opposition. This, however, is not the first time a regional party is experiencing so many defectors in such a short period of time. The Praja Rajyam, a regional political party in AP, was founded by Tollywood actor turned politician Chiranjeevi on 26 August 2008. On 6 February 2011, it was officially announced that the party would be merging with the Congress. It formally merged with the national party on August 2011.It was asserted by political observers that Chiranjeevi's move may have been prompted by his loss of support in the wake of his own strong anti-Telangana stance in the previous months.Keeping in mind the present scenario, however, all hope is not lost for Jagan and his party. Performing well enough in the polls, to bag the position of chief opposition, the party is targeting the government on a number of issues the new state faces - the latest being empty coffers and eroding beach roads."We are also fighting against the failed loan waiver scheme for the farmers offered by the TDP government for land pooling, for the proposed capital." Y.V. Subba Reddy, a YSRCP leader told The News Minute. The party has also asked for the expenditure list for all of chief minister Chandrababu Naidu's foreign trips including the recent visit to the economic world forum, which was taken from the state exchequer. The YSRCP leader also agrees that defections are a grave cause of concern for the party. "We are trying to fight a battle legally and have written to the speaker to disqualify the defectors in both the states" Subba Reddy adds. With the elections coming up in a few years, and TDP growing stronger, the YSR party chief must buck up and strive for a better image among the people, if the party is to grow and increase its influence in AP.TweetFollow @thenewsminute
