The News Minute| July 12, 2014| 10.30 pm ISTThe Congress on Sunday said the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) has become redundant and has no purpose to serve any further in observing ceasefire violations on Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. The party noted that the mandate of UNMOGIP lapsed with the signing of the SHIMLA agreement in 1972 when India and Pakistan agreed to settle all differences bilaterally by peaceful dialogue."However, since the UN had continued to post personnel, India continued with courtesies provided as a cooperative member of the UN," a party release said.It said that after the Shimla accord, India never filed any complaints of ceasefire violations on the LoC to UNMOGIP since bilateral mechanisms were put in place. The Congrss's reaction comes after the government asked the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) to vacate its government-provided accommodation here.A communication has been sent to the United Nations that UNMOGIP has "outlived" its relevance, external affairs ministry confirmed four days ago."As far as we are concerned, we have always maintained that UNMOGIP has outlived its relevance. This is a consistent stand we have taken and articulated over the time," ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin had told the media. The UNMOGIP, established under a UN Security Council Resolution to supervise the ceasefire line established under the Karachi agreement of July 1949, is currently stationed in a 7,000 sq feet bungalow at Purana Qila Road here. With IANS
