The indefinite strike was imposed by the United Naga Council (UNC) in all Naga-inhabited areas of the state on Thursday. The movement of trucks along the Imphal-Dimapur highway and Imphal-Jiribam highway were affected because of the strike. “I will travel along the Imphal-Dimapur highway tomorrow. I plan to meet sponsors of the strike in Senapati district and also assess the ground reality,†Gao said, reports The Telegraph. Tapir Gao is the state in-charge of Manipur and Nagaland. The strike was imposed to protest against the death of two protesters who were killed in a police firing when they had taken part in a procession demanding “honourable settlement†of the Naga political problem and against imposition of prohibitory orders and police deployment. The firing happened in the Ukhrul area on 30 August. The state has already started to experience the lack of fuel and vehicles are forming long queues in front of fuel stations daily. The issue has been taken up by the Centre and a solution would be found very soon, he added. He appealed to the UNC to call off the strike to allow free movement of supply trucks so as to provide relief to the common people. “I will pursue the matter with the Centre. I will submit a report to the government after assessing the ground situation and a solution should come,†he said. The Chief Minister Ibobi Singh said that the people need not panic as the state had enough stock of essential commodities including rice and fuel.
