In the wake of an airman getting honeytrapped online recently into revealing sensitive security details, the Army has issued detailed guidelines to its personnel and their family members for using social media.

The Army has come out with a detailed list of 10 do’s and don’ts for its forces, governing social media behaviour, in order to safeguard its interests.

This development comes after airman Ranjith KK was apprehended from Bhatinda on December 28 after he shared sensitive defence data with a woman on Facebook. He was honeytrapped by one Damini McNaught on Facebook, who was reportedly working for a leading UK magazine as an editor in the guise of a spy.

The army units have been advised to avoid posting photographs in uniform on their Whatsapp profiles as also images related to bases and weapons.

The security forces have also been instructed not to fall for any advertisements promising attractive rewards on social networking sites.

A senior officer of the Western Command told TOI that the advisory has been issued "to sensitize the troops about the latest modus operandi of the anti-nationals to steal vital information".
