A two-month-old baby died in Kerala’s Kozhikode district on Sunday, July 6, after being administered anaesthesia for a circumcision ceremony. The Kakkur police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) under Section 194 (unnatural death) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) based on a complaint filed by the parents.

According to the FIR, the child, Emin Adam, was admitted to the clinic at 10 am. Shortly after anaesthesia was administered, the infant began to show signs of physical distress and was rushed to a private hospital, as advised by the surgeon, due to the absence of a paediatrician at the clinic. The child was declared dead at 12.10 pm. while being transported to the hospital.

Preliminary police findings indicate that the child was born prematurely, a detail that had not been disclosed to the doctor before the procedure. “According to the preliminary inquiry, the child was born at eight months, which may have compromised the immune system. The parents did not inform the doctor of this. Administering anaesthesia without that knowledge may have led to the child’s physical distress and subsequent death,” police officials told TNM.

Police officials said further investigation will be carried out after the postmortem report is released. The postmortem examination is scheduled for Monday, July 7, at Kozhikode Government Medical College.
