The Kerala High Court, on Friday, March 7, expressed deep concern over the mental state of the country’s youth while granting bail to 25-year-old Sammil, accused of grievously attacking his mother for refusing to give money to celebrate the new year. Justice PV Kunhikrishnan said that the mental condition of youngsters in our country is “astonishing and disturbing”.
“There is no purpose in blaming the young generation. Society and parents should watch them closely and ensure they build good relationships,” the judge said. Despite the serious nature of the crime, the court granted bail after Sammil’s mother filed an affidavit stating she had no objection to his release.
Sammil, a resident of Thiruvananthapuram, allegedly inflicted multiple injuries on his mother’s head, face, and hand with a knife in an attempt to commit murder. He was arrested on January 1, 2025, and has been in custody since then.
Acknowledging the mother’s emotional turmoil after she filed the affidavit, Justice Kunhikrishnan noted, “I am sure that the wounds on her body might not have healed. But her love for her son overtakes the wounds. Thinking about the fate and trauma faced by the mother, I am forced to grant bail.”
Commenting on the disturbing nature of the crime, the judge further said that it is astonishing how a son could inflict such serious injuries on his own mother over money for New Year celebrations. “A mother’s love for her son is like a rose—it will bloom forever. No purpose will be served by keeping this youngster in detention, thereby continuing the trauma of his mother,” he stated.
The bail was granted under strict conditions, including a Rs 50,000 bond with two solvent sureties. Sammil must appear before the Investigating Officer every Monday at 10 am until the final report is filed.
The HC also ruled that if he engages in any criminal activity, his mother can approach the jurisdictional police station, which would then have the right to seek cancellation of the bail.
