A 42-year-old woman in Ernakulam's Kakkanad suffered severe burn injuries after her partner allegedly poured petrol on her and set her on fire in front of a women's hostel on Tuesday night, September 22.
The woman, identified as Jayasree, a native of Alappuzha, was reportedly staying at a local women's hostel in Kakkanad. The accused, Anilkumar (52), a native of Pathanamthitta, worked as parking staff at a private hospital in Kakkanad.
The incident occurred around 9 pm on Tuesday. According to reports, Anilkumar called Jayasree out of her hostel at Ambadimoola. Following an argument over alleged family disputes, Anil poured petrol on her and set her on fire.
Neighbours rushed to douse the flames and detained the accused. Residents noticed burn marks on Anilkumar and handed him over to the Thrikkakara Police.
“We were talking at the junction and suddenly saw a man running. Later, a few people came running and asked if we had seen anyone running that way, and that was when we learned that a woman at the hostel had been doused with petrol and set on fire. Then we caught the man and handed him over to the police,” a resident told the media.
He also said that Anil refused to answer their questions initially but later admitted to setting Jayashree on fire when they pointed out that he had burn injuries on his hands. “When we questioned him, he said that he had poured petrol and set her on fire,” the resident added.
Jayasree was rushed to a private hospital and is currently under medical observation. According to reports, the Thrikkakara police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Anil and launched an investigation.
