
The Principal and an Assistant Professor at the Government Nursing College in Kottayam has been suspended in connection with the brutal ragging that occurred in the institution’s hostel. They were suspended following an order issued by state health minister, Veena George, on Friday, February 14.
A statement issued by the Health Minister's office said, Dr Sulekha AT, the principal of the institution and Assistant Professor, Ajeesh P Mani, who also served as the assistant warden at the boy’s hostel were suspended pending enquiry for allegedly failing in their duties. Additionally, a person who works as the security-cum-housekeeper was also removed.
Speaking to the media on February 14, Veena George said that the Director of Medical Education has assigned a team to visit the college and inquire about the incident.
A video of the brutal ragging incident surfaced on social media on February 13. It shows a student, whose hand and legs are tied, being stabbed with a divider, dumbbells being placed on the private part and lotion poured over his body. The incident occurred on February 9. The First Information Report (FIR) said the first incident occurred in November 2024 and the harassment continued until February.
The Gandhinagar police in Kottayam arrested the accused a day after the students registered the complaint. The accused in the case are, second year students, Samuel Johnson (20) and Jeeva NS (18), and third year students, Rahul Raj (22), Vivek NV(21), and Rijil Jith (20).
