In a shocking incident, a four-month-old baby was thrown into a well by her 12-year-old cousin in Kerala’s Kannur. A case of suspicious death turned into murder when the girl admitted to the crime on March 18.
The deceased, identified as Yasika, was the daughter of Akkammal and Muthu, hailing from Tamil Nadu. The couple moved to Kerala three years ago. Yasika‘s cousin– Muthu‘s brother's daughter– was in Kerala to spend the vacation.
Yasika was sleeping with her parents when she went missing and was later found in a well near her residence on Monday, March 17. She was declared dead, despite being rushed to the hospital.
“The parents of the four-month-old had suspicions as the door was locked from the inside. The 12-year-old had the perception that she would never get affection because of the baby. Also, we found a contradiction between the statements of the girl and the parents of the four-month-old”, Karthick K IPS, head of the investigation team, told the media.
Yasika‘s cousin initially told the police that she had gone to the toilet at night and had not seen the baby when she returned. Later, she admitted to tossing the baby into the well.
According to a relative, Muthu‘s brother died three months ago, leading to his wife abandoning their two daughters. Muthu then took both the children under his care.
Initially, the police had registered a First Information Report under Section 194(1) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) which deals with death occurring under suspicious circumstances.
