The Kerala Police on Monday, August 17, arrested the All Kerala Men's Association president, Vattiyoorkavu Ajith Kumar, for making sexually suggestive and derogatory remarks against women. The Thiruvananthapuram City Cyber Police took him into custody following a complaint filed by the director of the Women and Child Development Department.
In a Facebook video, Ajith Kumar verbally abused women who participated in the 'Resurgence: Freedom at Midnight' programme organised by the Department of Women and Child Development on August 14.
The 'Resurgence: Freedom at Midnight' initiative was a midnight-to-early-morning women's gathering and public space reclamation programme held in Thiruvananthapuram from 9.30 pm on August 14 to 1.00 am on August 15. It was inaugurated by Chief Minister VD Satheesan as part of the Independence Day celebrations.
Ajith had made sexually suggestive remarks against the women who participated in the event, and the video was shared on his personal Facebook page and the official page of the All Kerala Men’s Association. Thiruvananthapuram Cyber Police told the media that further investigation into the incident is underway.
Earlier, the AKMA had protested the UDF government’s Priyadarsini scheme, which makes travel free for women in Kerala State Road Transport Corporation’s ordinary buses.
Previously, the AKMA has ‘honoured’ sexual offenders. In 2024, they celebrated the bail release of Pulsar Suni, the convict in the 2017 Kerala actor assault case. In June 2023, they celebrated the release of 28-year-old Savad Sha, who had been arrested for flashing a woman and masturbating on a public bus.
