The mortal remains of Subaida Kayikkal, hacked to death by her son in Thamarassery of Kerala’s Kozhikode, were buried at the Adivaram Town Juma Masjid on Sunday, January 19. Subaida was a single mother, divorced for 23 years, and was recovering after a brain tumour surgery. The murder occurred on January 18, when Subaida’s son, 25-year-old Ashik, killed her as a ‘punishment for birthing him’, according to reports.

The incident happened in the afternoon while Subaida rested alone at her sister’s place. The police told the media that Ashik had borrowed a billhook knife from a neighbour saying he needed to dehusk coconut. “He used to constantly ask his mother for money and the property she owned. Apart from this, he used to tell people that he wanted to kill his mother and this is not the first time that he tried to kill her,” the police said.

Immediately after the incident, neighbours and police came to the scene and rushed Subaida to the hospital. However, her life could not be saved. Her body was then shifted to the Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital mortuary for other procedures. Ashik was taken into custody on the same day of the crime by the Thamarassery police.

Media reports also say that Ashik is a drug addict and has undergone treatment at various de-addiction centres. However, the police have not yet confirmed whether he committed the murder under the influence of drugs.
