Five first-year MBBS students at Kerala's Alappuzha Medical College hospital died in a horrific accident the night of Monday, December 2, after their car collided with a Kerala State Road Transportation Corporation (KSRTC) passenger bus. The incident occurred near Alappuzha around 9 pm when the students' Tavera car, reportedly traveling at high speed, skidded and hit the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (Kerala SRTC) bus traveling from Guruvayur to Kayamkulam.
According to eyewitnesses, the impact of the collision caused the car to be cut open, ejecting the students onto the road. Three students died at the scene, while two succumbed to their injuries on the way to Alappuzha Medical College hospital. Two more students are currently hospitalized, with one in critical condition.
Police are investigating the cause of the accident, but preliminary reports suggest that the car was attempting to overtake another vehicle when it lost control and skidded into the oncoming bus. The bus driver reported that despite his attempts to avoid the collision, the car's high speed made it impossible.
The deceased students have been identified as Mohammed, Muhasin, Ibrahim, Devanand, and Shreedeep. Ten students were reportedly traveling in the car at the time of the accident.
Alappuzha Municipal Vice-Chairman PSM Hussain stated that authorities are awaiting CCTV footage from the accident scene. He also mentioned that the students were on their way to Kochi. The Police and the Motor Vehicles Department are currently investigating the accident.
This tragic incident follows a separate accident in Kerala's Pathanamthitta district on December 1, where eight commuters were injured in a collision between an ambulance and a KSRTC bus.
