Heavy rains lash parts of Kerala, red warning in four districts

A red warning has been issued in Kasargod, Kannur, Kozhikode and Malappuram; and an orange warning in Wayanad and Thrissur. A yellow warning has been issued for six districts – Palakkad, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam, Alappuzha, and Pathanamthitta.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall to occur in parts of Kerala on December 3. A red warning has been issued in Kasargod, Kannur, Kozhikode and Malappuram; and an orange warning in Wayanad and Thrissur. A yellow warning has been issued for six districts – Palakkad, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam, Alappuzha, and Pathanamthitta.

“Heavy rainfall (7cm to 11cm in 24 hours) is very likely to occur at isolated places in Kerala on 03rd December and in Lakshadweep on 03rd & 04th December 2024. Thunderstorm with lightning are very likely to occur at one or two places in Kerala from 02nd to 04th December and in Lakshadweep on 03rd & 04th December 2024,” the met department has said.

Meanwhile, the district collectors of Kasaragod, Thrissur and Alappuzha have declared a holiday for all educational institutions and it is a holiday for all educational institutions except professional colleges in Malappuram.

According to the IMD's warning system, a red warning denotes rainfall exceeding 20 cm in 24 hours, an orange warning indicates 11-20 cm of rainfall, and a yellow warning signals heavy rainfall ranging from 6-11 cm.
