Following the escape of Govindachamy, also known as Charley Thomas, who was serving a life sentence for the brutal rape and killing of a 23-year-old woman in Kannur Central Jail, the mother of the woman said she suspected he received help for his escape. She also urged the authorities to catch him immediately. Govindachamy had been held in a high-security single cell, and according to reports, he broke out of prison in the early hours of Friday, July 25.

“How did he manage to escape from Kannur jail without any support? It's been 15 years. I am sure he might have received support. Otherwise, how could he escape with only one hand? He should be caught immediately,” the 23-year-old's mother told the media, holding her daughter’s photograph.

She also raised a question about why no police officers noticed his escape from a high-security prison. “It is not a normal jail; it is a high-security jail, and there are many police officers guarding the prisoners. Why did no one notice a criminal escaping?” she asked.

She also said that people would catch Govindachamy, as no one could forget the 23-year-old's brutal rape case. “I had said that no mother had the fate to cry for her daughter like I did. I believe he cannot escape from here. People will catch him. I am sure no one in our society has forgotten my daughter.  So, no one will allow him to live freely in this world,” she said.

Govindachamy was convicted of the rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman in February 2011. The incident occurred on 1 February 2011, when the woman was travelling on a train from Ernakulam to Shoranur. He pushed her off the train and raped her. She later died from her injuries at Thrissur Medical College on February 6.

According to Kannur police commissioner Nidhin Raj, Govindachamy escaped the jail between 4.15 am and 6.30 am. Meanwhile, police are conducting a massive search operation across Kerala. Checks at railway stations and bus terminals have intensified, and CCTV footage from areas surrounding the jail is being examined as part of the investigation.
