Many communists in Kerala align with the thought that Chinese Communism is not really communism and closer to capitalism. So when the Chinese Ambassador to India Le Yucheng who was on a visit to the state had some sound advice to offer, the communists back home were not too amused. Le Yucheng said that political parties, including the Communist parties, must not be tied down by ideologies and work to improve the lives of people. In what could be seen as veiled criticism, he also said, according The Hindu’s report that they must work for “prosperity, development and Communist politicians in Kerala are not taking kindly to the unsolicited advice. “We know our country better,” says Thomas Isaac defensively. "We decide what is best for our country. We make policies that are good for our country since we understand its situation better,” says Isaac rejecting Yucheng’s advice. Isaac is a Central Committee member of Communist Party of India (Marxist) and also the MLA of Alappuzha constituency. MA Baby, a member of the CPI (M) who is known for his grass root level work cutting across also does not agree entirely with the Chinese Ambassador's advice, although he does not reject it entirely. Baby says that ideological commitment need not mean compromise of "As far as communist parties are concerned we compile our ideological approach and concepts of development and channel it to the areas that need focus,” says Baby, “We have been successful in sticking to our ideological moorings and focussing on development.” As an example of their achievement, Baby points out to the techno-park in Kerala that CPI (M) had initiated and is now celebrating its silver jubilee. "CPI (M) has never had any problems in the working of ideologies across sectors". He says that across sectors like education and health, the party has been able to contribute to Kerala’s economy however, could do with some help. The News Minute has earlier reported on how Kerala’s agriculture is on the brink of collapse. Surviving on foreign remittances, the state has been criticised in the past as being a ‘money order economy’ and has faced severe financial crises in the past few years. The state however has the best social indicators in the country and is a model-state for social equality.
