The Sree Narayana Guru Manava Dharmam Trust in Kerala will join as a party in the petition challenging the constitutionality of the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025. The Trust filed an intervention application in the Supreme Court on April 3, seeking to intervene in the group of petitions challenging the amended Waqf law. They argue that the law threatens the existence of the Muslim community in the country.

The Trust, named after the revered Kerala-based social reformer and philosopher Sree Narayana Guru, was established in 2023 to spread his teachings of social justice and equality. The Guru had led numerous movements against caste-based discrimination in Kerala and is seen as an icon of progressive reform.

In its plea, the Trust argued that the amended Waqf law poses a serious threat to the very existence of the Muslim community in India. “Sree Narayana Manava Dharmam Trust cannot be an idle spectator to the devastating impact of the impugned Act taken as a whole on the Muslim community of India and to social justice in our country,” the petition stated, according to Bar and Bench.

The Trust filed the intervention application as the SC has prohibited the filing of more petitions challenging the amended Waqf law and said those seeking to challenge the law can move intervention applications to add to the arguments of the existing petitioners.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has scheduled to hear the batch of pleas on Monday, May 5.

The Waqf Amendment Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha on April 4 despite Muslim objections and Opposition protests that it violates minority and state rights. The bill was passed with 128 in favour and 95 against it.

The Trust said that the “Impugned Act thus threatens the very existence of the Muslim community in India which depends for its survival on the Waqf mechanism which has been for centuries, and continues to be, the most important source of economic and financial resources essential for the practice and survival of Islam in India.”
