The News Minute | September 21, 2014 | 12.01 pm ISTThe word Hindu did not originate in India and none of the Vedas or Upanishads contain it, former union minister M Veerappa Moily said on Sunday.Speaking at a programme organised by the Shivamurthy Swami of Mugura Mutt, Moily said that the word Hindu did not originate in India, and that there was no reference to the term in any of the Vedas or Upanishads. The word Hindu was brought to India by the Mohammedans, Moily said.Moily said that an attempt was being made to use the word Hindu to turn upside down, the basis of our confidence, and that it was destroying the essence of India. He said the word Hindu was being used for vested interests.
