A Solid Waste Management Learning Centre and several waste-processing facilities were inaugurated in Bengaluru’s Koramangala on Monday, September 7, as part of the government’s efforts to promote scientific waste management and recycling.
The facilities were inaugurated by Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Ramalinga Reddy, Commissioner K N Ramesh and former Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) member Chandrappa.
According to the Greater Bengaluru Authority, the learning centre will offer practical training on waste segregation, scientific disposal, recycling and resource recovery. The programme is intended for students, residents of apartment complexes, commercial establishments and civic workers.
Among the facilities inaugurated is a 13-tonne-capacity biomethanation plant, which will process organic waste and generate biogas for use by nearby hotels. The site also has 25-tonne-capacity mini transfer stations for handling and transferring waste.
Other units at the centre will process different types of waste. Textile waste will be recycled into products such as bags, mats and bedsheets, while thermocol will be processed into reusable products. Mattress waste will also be treated to recover reusable fibre.
The facility will also support doorstep collection of bulky household waste in the BTM Layout Assembly Constituency. Residents can coordinate through their resident welfare association (RWA) groups to arrange collection of discarded items such as old sofas, cots and tables. The collected waste will then be sent for recycling.
A modern restroom facility has also been established at the Kasa Rasa Centre for the use of staff and visitors.
The facilities are intended to promote waste segregation, recycling and resource recovery as part of Bengaluru’s solid waste management efforts.
