The Congress and BJP have taken jabs at each other over the renaming of a road in Mysuru after Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The Mysuru City Corporation had proposed to rename 1.5 km KRS Road, also called Princess Road, after the Chief Minister, to Siddaramaiah Arogya Road.
The BJP has hit out at the CM over the decision, with party chief BY Vijayendra it was inappropriate for the CM to name a road in a city built by the Wodeyars after himself. “How valid and appropriate is this decision taken by the Mysuru City Corporation, which currently has no public representatives? Doesn’t it offend the morality of the chief minister who is in power and is trying to name the road after himself?” he said on X.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah dismissed the BJP’s criticism, saying that it was the saffron party’s job to oppose things. “Will the BJP welcome it? Opposing things is their duty. They oppose good and bad things. They don’t know anything,” he said.
Mysuru MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar said that the attacks on the former royal family had increased after he became MP. He said he has no objection to the MCC renaming any road after the CM but KRS Road should be left as it is. He said that the road was called Princess Road because of Princess Krishnarajammani who died of tuberculosis in 1904.
Former Mysuru-Kodagu MP Prathap Simha however, welcomed the move.
