Former Janata Dal (Secular) MP Prajwal Revanna, who is serving a life sentence after being convicted in a rape case, was allegedly found using a mobile phone inside Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Prison during a surprise search by Central Crime Branch (CCB) officials.
According to reports, the phone was allegedly found concealed in Revanna’s clothes. A pen drive and a charger were also recovered from his cell. He reportedly feigned ignorance when questioned about the devices.
The recovery has raised questions over alleged VIP treatment and security lapses involving high-profile prisoners inside the prison. Parappana Agrahara police have registered an FIR in connection with the recovery, while an investigation is under way to determine how the prohibited devices reached Revanna.
Authorities have suspended Jail Assistant Superintendent Eeranna Rangapur for alleged dereliction of duty. Jail Superintendent Ansuch Kumar has also been served a show-cause notice seeking an explanation for the security lapses in Revanna’s cell.
Revanna, the grandson of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda and nephew of Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy, was sentenced to life imprisonment last year after being convicted of raping a 48-year-old woman and intimidating her. He was also convicted in connection with the circulation of videos of the sexual assault.
The woman, who worked as domestic help at the Revanna family’s farmhouse in Holenarasipura in Hassan district, had alleged that Revanna raped her repeatedly from 2021. He had allegedly recorded the assaults and threatened to release the videos if she spoke about them.
Revanna left for Germany after the videos emerged and was subsequently suspended by the JD(S). He lost the 2024 Lok Sabha election and was arrested after returning to India.
