The IMD has extended its yellow alert for Bengaluru and 22 other districts in Karnataka until Thursday, May 21, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds up to 60 kmph.

The weather department attributed the intense rainfall to an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and a trough stretching from Telangana to northern Tamil Nadu.

On Monday, May 19, coastal districts including Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

Belagavi, Dharwad, Haveri, and Bagalkot districts in the north interior region, have been issued warnings for heavy rain and gusty winds up to 50 kmph.

Similar conditions are predicted in Vijayapura, Gadag, and Koppal, while Bidar, Kalaburagi, Raichur, and Yadgir are expected to receive moderate showers.

In south interior Karnataka, isolated heavy rain is forecast in Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, and Bengaluru, with gusty winds reaching up to 40 kmph in some areas.

On Tuesday, May 20, extremely heavy rainfall is forecast for parts of coastal Karnataka, particularly Udupi and Dakshina Kannada.

Belagavi in north interior Karnataka is also under an extremely heavy rainfall warning. Other districts such as Dharwad, Haveri, and Gadag are expected to see heavy showers and gusty winds. South interior districts, especially Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru, may experience strong thunderstorms and very heavy rainfall.

By Wednesday, May 21, Uttara Kannada in the coastal belt is likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall, while Udupi and Dakshina Kannada remain under heavy rain alerts.

Belagavi will continue to face intense showers in the north, and Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru are expected to remain among the worst-hit areas in the south. Bengaluru, Tumakuru, and Davangere may also see significant rainfall.

On Thursday, May 22, the coastal districts will continue to receive heavy rain, particularly in Udupi and Uttara Kannada. North Karnataka’s Belagavi, Bagalkot, and Vijayapura districts are expected to get heavy rain, while moderate rainfall is likely across the rest of the region.

In the south, moderate to heavy rain will continue in Kodagu, Hassan, and Shivamogga, while Bengaluru, Mysuru, and Mandya will receive light to moderate showers.

The rain is expected to persist into Friday and Saturday, with intermittent heavy rainfall in isolated pockets. Udupi and Uttara Kannada will remain vulnerable to localised heavy downpours. In the north, Belagavi and Bagalkot may again see isolated heavy rain, and in the south, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan will remain under watch for thunderstorms and strong winds.
