Months after Chikmagalur Rural DySP Kallappa Handibag committed suicide after being accused of kidnap and extortion, his brother Yallappa also allegedly committed suicide on Thursday.

According to reports, Yallappa, who is a constable at the Kulgod police station in Gokak taluk of Belagavi district, did not return to duty after his lunch break. After his parents, worried about him not receiving their call, telephoned the station, police personnel went looking for him. They found his body hanging in his rented accommodation.

While police are unable to confirm why Yallappa may have taken this extreme step, some reports mentioned that the constable was depressed since his brother’s suicide.

In July, DySP Kallappa Handibag had committed suicide after a departmental inquiry was initiated against him based on a complaint of kidnapping and extortion by Kempanahalli-based financier Thejas HM.

Thejas had told police that he had been kidnapped by six men on June 28 near his house, brought to Bengaluru and tortured for a ransom of Rs 10 lakh. Thejas had alleged that the DySP had functioned as a go-between in the extortion, receiving calls from Thejas’s friend Pavan.

The Kulgod police have registered a case and an investigation into Yallappa’s death is currently underway.
