Thirty-one Bangladeshi nationals who were detained by 10 different police stations in Bengaluru were sent to Malda in West Bengal on Monday, August 31, as part of the process to deport them to Bangladesh.
The deportees were transported from Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) Bengaluru to Malda Railway Station, escorted by a team of 20 police personnel. They are expected to reach Malda on Tuesday, September 1, at around 5 pm.
The action was carried out as part of "Operation Mukta," the ongoing drive by Bengaluru City Police to identify and track illegal immigrants residing in the city.
M Narayana, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Electronics City), Bengaluru City Police, said the drive against illegal immigrants would continue. "Today, 31 Bangladeshi nationals who were secured by 10 different police stations were sent from SMVT Bengaluru to Malda Railway Station in West Bengal for deportation. They are being escorted by 20 police personnel," he said.
On reaching Malda, the detainees will be handed over to West Bengal authorities for further procedures related to their deportation.
The Bengaluru City Police had launched a special verification drive called 'Operation Mukta', on August 8 and 9 to identify suspected illegal immigrants.
Whitefield Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Saidulu Adavath said the drive was being carried out on the directions of the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner.
"As per the directions of the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner, a special drive is being conducted across the city. In the Whitefield Division alone, more than 500 staff and officers are involved. This is actually a continuous and regular exercise," he said.
The Bengaluru police have been criticised for Operation Mukta by activists who accused the city police of arbitrarily detaining hundreds of Bengali speaking people from slums across the city and demanding documents from them.
