The Civil Registration System (CRS) report for 2021, the worst year of the Covid-19 pandemic for the country, showed a sharp spike in overall mortality in Karnataka. The data released earlier in May shows that while the annual average number of deaths in the state between 2012 and 2020 was 4.5 lakh, the number rose to 6.6 lakh in 2021 — an increase of over 2 lakh deaths. Of these, 3.5 lakh deaths were reported in rural areas and 3.2 lakh in urban areas.

Among the dead, male members accounted for 60% of the deaths in Karnataka that year, with 4 lakh fatalities. The highest number of deaths occurred in the 70-plus age group at 2.6 lakh, followed by 1.3 lakh deaths in the 55–64 age group. The least number of deaths was in the 1–4 age group, with 947 deaths. Karnataka alone contributed 1.6 lakh to the 19.7 lakh excess deaths recorded across 18 states that year, highlighting the extent of the pandemic’s toll.

India recorded over one crore deaths in 2021, an increase of 21 lakh from the 81.2 lakh deaths in 2020. In 2019, the number of registered deaths was 76.4 lakh. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had reported 3.3 lakh Covid-19 deaths in 2021. The Medical Certification of Cause of Death (MCCD) report showed 4.13 lakh deaths due to Covid-19 that year.

The Office of the Registrar General recently released three reports related to 2021 — the Sample Registration System (SRS) Statistical Report, the Civil Registration System (CRS) report, and the Medical Certification of Cause of Death (MCCD) report. Analysts have said the figures point to massive undercounting of Covid-19 victims in 2021, when the pandemic peaked.
