Karnataka MLA seeks abolition of Legislative Council

 JD(S) legislator M T Krishnappa on Monday wrote a letter to Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa to permit him to move a private member resolution in the Assembly seeking abolition of the Legislative Council, reported Deccan Herald.In his letter, he writes that the Council was established in 1907 with the intention of bringing together, the government and qualified people. Only a few were handpicked for their knowledge in education, law, science etc.However, it had lost relevance of the original purpose for which it was constituted and the composition of the recent Upper House did not have representation of eminent people.“Instead, the Council has become a platform for politicians who lose direct elections to make a backdoor entry,” he wrote in his letter.He further stated that there was a provision in the Constitution which gave Assembly the power to constitute and abolish the Legislative Council and as many states do not have a Council, Karnataka, could be one among them.
