A postgraduate medical student at the government hospital in Hassan district was allegedly assaulted in the early hours of Tuesday, February 25, by a man who sought treatment.

Hassan City Police said that a man named Abhishek had come to the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, seeking treatment around 3 am on Tuesday. A PG student named Dr Veera Manoj Kumar had directed him to the Out Patient Department and went away to make a call. However, Abhishek demanded that Dr Veera himself treat him. He and his friends then assaulted Veera Manoj Kumar.

Dozens of medical students studying at HIMS staged a protest outside the casualty area against the assault.

Based on Veera Manoj Kumar’s complaint, police have booked Abhishek under Sections 109 (attempt to murder), 132 (deterring public servant from discharging duties), 126 (wrongful restraint) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and Sections 3 (prohibition of violence) and 4 (penalty) of the Karnataka Prohibition of Violence Against Medicare Service Personnel and Damage to Property in Medicare Service Institutions Act 2009.

Police said that they are in the process of arresting Abhishek and his associates.
