The enumeration phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Karnataka, which was scheduled to end on Saturday, has been extended till August 17, the Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) office announced on Friday, August 7. This is the second extension granted for the exercise.
With the extension, the draft electoral rolls will now be published on August 24 instead of August 17. The period for filing claims and objections will run from August 24 to September 23, while the final electoral rolls will be published on October 27.
The extension comes days after civil society groups urged the Election Commission to extend the exercise following the publication of the Absent, Shifted, Duplicate, Dead and Others (ASDDO) list. The groups argued that voters needed adequate time to verify their status and approach Booth Level Officers (BLOs) if they had been wrongly classified.
Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president BK Hariprasad had also written to the Karnataka CEO on August 6, seeking a 15-day extension of the enumeration exercise.
The extended deadline gives voters whose names were wrongly included in the ASDDO list more time to correct their details. They can approach their respective BLOs till August 17 to submit the required information and documents.
