Kris Gopalakrishnan, co-founder of Infosys, on Wednesday, November 16 said that the IT industry will recruit two lakh people in the near term. Gopalakrishnan, who is also the chairman of the Karnataka government's Vision Group on IT, said that while there might be ups and downs, they would only last for a limited period of time. Addressing an audience at the Bengaluru Tech Summit, he said, “There will be ups and downs because the industry will follow ups and downs in the global economy, but that’s the short term.”

He further noted that the industry was anticipated to increase at a rate of 8-10%, which was not a small rate of growth given the $220 billion base. “The Indian IT services companies and the global development centres in India demonstrated that they have the resilience to withstand any shock and they came out with flying colours,” he said.

In order to promote innovation and entrepreneurship, he said that the industry also has to confront the issue of data privacy and protection, and it advocates in favour of openly shared databases for startups, business owners, and researchers. Speaking about Karnataka's “Beyond Bengaluru” programme, he said, “IT industry in Karnataka is expanding outside of Bengaluru by establishing centres in Mysuru, Mangaluru, Hubballi-Dharwad, and Belgaum. Given the state of the market, HR professionals think it might take some time for the IT industry to increase recruiting rates.”

Touted as Asia’s largest tech festival, the 25th edition of the Bengaluru Tech Summit is being held from November 16 to 18 at Bangalore Palace.
