The Tata Group and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have announced plans to establish a medical school on IISc’s Bengaluru campus, with the aim of making a transformative step in India’s medical education and research landscape. Supported by a Rs 500 crore contribution from the Tata Group, the Tata IISc Medical School aims to integrate clinical practice with cutting-edge scientific innovation.
According to an official statement released by IISc on January 15, the medical school will serve as a center of excellence, focusing on various specializations, including oncology, cardiology, neurology, nephrology, diabetes and metabolic disorders, infectious diseases, integrative medicine, and public health. The initiative seeks to develop a unique model of clinical research and medical education by combining basic science and engineering with clinical science and practice.
The Tata IISc Medical School will offer integrated MD-PhD and other dual-degree programs designed to train a new generation of physician-scientists and medical technologists. Students will benefit from interdisciplinary training across the medical school and IISc’s advanced science and engineering laboratories, fostering a blend of clinical expertise and scientific research. The school also plans to collaborate with leading global medical institutions, enabling students to gain international expertise and adopt best practices. This innovative approach aims to create a replicable framework for clinical research and training throughout India.
The collaboration between the Tata Group and IISc was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed earlier this week.
