A 10-month-old baby died after swallowing a piece of beedi, allegedly thrown away by his father, in Karnataka’s Mangaluru, police said on Tuesday, June 17. The child’s mother, Lakshmidevi, has filed a complaint of negligence against her husband, Bittu Kumar.

The incident occurred on June 14, at around 1:30 pm in Adyar, where the family, originally from Bihar, resides. The infant, Anish Kumar, ingested a piece of the tobacco product and was rushed to the Wenlock Hospital at around 3:30 pm. Despite receiving intensive medical treatment, the child died at 10:25 am on June 15.

In her complaint to the Mangaluru rural police, the child’s mother said she had repeatedly warned her husband not to discard beedi stubs where the baby could reach them. Bittu Kumar, works as a wedding decorator.

A case has been registered at the Mangaluru Rural Police Station.
