Watch: ‘9’ trailer shows Prithviraj as the worried dad of a scared son

The film – reported be a horror and sci-fi thriller – is directed by Jenuse Mohamed and has Prithviraj, Mamta Mohandas, Wamiqa Gabbi and Prakash Raj in the lead, along with child actor Alok.

Adam is afraid. In the movie 9, where Adam is the son of Prithviraj’s worried-dad character. It is a thriller, no doubt. There is the haunting music, there are the chase sequences, there is the mystery of what Adam is afraid of. And then Prakash Raj, playing a slightly old man, tells Prithvi’s character, your son is exceptionally intelligent.

The film comes from Jenuse Mohamed who made his first film 100 Days of Love, nearly four years ago. Son of director Kamal, known for his romantic comedies, Jenuse, making a movie about old and new love, seemed to follow in his dad’s footsteps. But then 9 seems to be a whole different cup of tea, more horror than romance, though there are the bits where the movie’s male and female leads – Prithviraj and Mamta Mohandas – share happy moments together. Must be before Adam and his fear become the centre of the story?

There is also Wamiqa Gabbi, who had conquered many hearts as the wrestler in Godha. It is not clear what her role is in 9. The title itself seems to be connected to a line Prithvi says, about ‘these nine days’.

There were reports that the film is both horror and sci-fi and that Prithvi plays a scientist in it. From the character posters released earlier, it is known that Wamiqa plays Eva and Mamta’s character is called Annie. With child actor Alok playing Adam, you might wonder if there is any biblical connection between his Adam and Wamiqa’s Eva.

Shaan Rahman has composed the songs of the film while Sekhar Menon – DJ and lead actor of the film Da Thadiya – is behind the mostly scary background music. Abhinandhan Ramanujan is the cinematographer and Shameer Muhammed is the editor.

Shot in Kerala and the Himalayas, the filming has been done for 9 using Red Gemini 5K camera,  the first time for an Indian film. This film marks the entry of Sony Pictures into the Malayalam film industry as distributor. The trailer will be telecast on 15 Malayalam channels at 9 pm on January 9.
