Ushering in the New Year, Lyca Productions announced the title of Suriya’s 37th film - Kaappaan - ten minutes after midnight. The film’s first-look poster has Suriya looking crisp in a suit, holding a gun and leading what appears to be a SWAT team.
Directed by KV Anand, the film also stars Mohanlal and Arya. The title suggests an action-packed entertainer.
Touted to be a mega-budget entertainer, the film has an impressive line-up of stars like Sayyeshaa, Boman Irani, and Samuthirakani. Kaappaan will have Harris Jayaraj composing the tunes, cinematographer Abhinandan Ramanujam behind the camera and Anthony editing it.

The film has been scripted jointly by director KV Anand and veteran writer Pattukottai Prabhakar. Last week, the film’s director Anand took to Twitter to run a poll with three title options and asked fans to participate and pick the best title. The three options mentioned were Meetpaan, Kaappaan and Uirka. Anand also revealed that Kaanjagan is the fourth title option while replying to a fan’s tweet. Uirka won the poll with a maximum percentage of votes.
In the film, Suriya is rumoured to be playing a bodyguard to Mohanlal, who is said to be playing a Prime Minister. The film originally starred Telugu actor Allu Sirish in a crucial role. He later chose to exit from the project and revealed the reason via a statement.
“This is to let you all know about my part in Suriya 37. My dates required for the film was clashing with my other film ABCD. The shoot dates could not be rescheduled because of the logistics involved. Keeping in mind the best interest of both the films, I volunteered to step down from the role. And the director KV Anand sir too has understood the issue and accepted my decision,” he was quoted as saying.
