Superstar Rajinikanth’s Petta was believed to be a summer 2019 release until a few weeks ago. If the latest grapevine is anything to go by, the film might hit the screens for Pongal next year. Actor Muniskanth Ramadass, who plays an important role, has revealed in his latest interview that the film will hit the screens for Pongal and this means it’ll be a direct clash with Ajith’s Viswasam at the box-office.

Sun Pictures, the makers of the film, is yet to officially announce the release date but taking into the consideration that the film’s shoot has been wrapped up two weeks in advance is an indication that the release could happen earlier than expected.

Rajinikanth on Saturday took to Twitter to announce the completion of Petta. He wrote: “It’s a wrap for Petta. 15 days ahead of schedule. I thank Sun Pictures, Karthik Subbaraj, DOP Tirru and the entire team involved.”

To this, the film’s director Karthik Subburaj replied, “Thanks thalaivaaaa Best days of my life.... Dream come true.... #Petta shoot wrapped... Thanks to the whole team for making this happen.... Still can't believe that I directed a Thalaivar film... All feels like a dream...”

There are already rumours doing the rounds that if Petta hits the screens of Pongal, then Viswasam might step out of the race as both happen to be big-ticket films and theatres will find it difficult to allot screens. It’s also being said that the Pongal of 2019 is a six-day long weekend and the trade can comfortably allow two big films to release.

Petta, which marks Subbaraj’s first-time collaboration with Rajinikanth, also stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Vijay Sethupathi, Simran, Trisha, Sasi Kumar, Megha Akash and Bobby Simhaa in key roles among others.

On teaming up with the 67-year-old star, Subbaraj had said he sees it as a fascinating opportunity to make his dream come true. The film is being bankrolled by Sun Pictures on a lavish budget.

The title and motion poster of the film were released last month amid very high expectations and was received by mixed response. The entire motion poster – featuring Rajinikanth turning and walking in slow motion – unfolds inside a church.
