Vikatan awards for 2018 was announced on January 3, 2019, and the ceremony took place on Sunday night in Chennai. The star-studded affair was attended by many from the film fraternity. Vikatan Awards was introduced in 2008 and has since become a prestigious award in the industry. The awards were given for various categories like Best Film, Best Actor (male and female), Best Comedy Actor (male and female), Best Screenplay Writer, Best Dialogue writer and more.
Director Lenin Barathi’s Merku Thodarchi Malai won the Best Film award, and also fetched Lenin the Best Debut Director Award. Mari Selvaraj, on the other hand, was awarded Best Director for Pariyerum Perumal. The film also won Best Story.
Vetrimaaran’s Vada Chennai won under two categories - Best Screenplay and Best Art Direction (Art director Jackie). While director Ameer won Best Supporting Actor for his role in Vada Chennai, Dhanush received Best Actor Male for this film and for Maari 2. Trisha’s role in Premkumar’s 96 won her the Best Actor Female.

Actor Easwari Rao won best Character Artist Female for her role Selvi in Rajinikanth-starrer Kaala.
Actor Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, who played characters with negative shades this year - Pechi in Vishal’s Sandakozhi 2 and Komalavalli in Vijay’s Sarkar - won her very first Vikatan Award under the Best Villain Female category.

Music Director Santhosh Narayanan won the Best Music Director Award for his work in Ranjith’s Kaala, Maari Selvaraj’s Pariyerum Perumal and Vetrimaaran’s Vada Chennai.
Actor Yogi Babu won the Best Comedy Actor (Male) for his roles in Kolamaavu Kokila and Pariyerum Perumal, while actor Revathi won the female category of the same award for Gulaebaghavali.
Editor San Lokesh won Best Editor Award for his work in Ramkumar’s Ratsasan. Director Ranjith won Best Dialogue Writer Award for Kaala along with Makizhnan B and M Aadhavan Dheetchanya. Cinematographer Nirav Shah received Best Cinematographer Award for Shankar’s 2.0.
