Vijayawada born singer Smita has recently released a two-minute short film, that emphasizes the need for women to be economically independent.
The film titled 'Dying to be Me,' was released on India's 69th Independence Day, and sends out a powerful message.
In the film, Smita portrays a housewife, who wants to take up a job, but the idea is shot down by her husband (played by Ravi Verma) immediately, who claims that 'a real woman's job is raising kids and taking care of her in-laws.'
Without giving away too much, the woman makes her choice in the end and declares that she is taking the job, for her freedom and dignity.
According to a report in The Hindu, the film is produced by Deva Katta, an Indian American filmmaker, known for his works predominantly in Telugu cinema.
“Dying to be me, is dedicated to the cause of women’s economic independence and a small effort to make our society think about its women and encourage and support them to realize their true potential," Smita wrote on YouTube.
